Renting a Car in the Dominican Republic: What to Know Before You Book

Renting a car in the Dominican Republic can be one of the best ways to explore the country, but it is not for everyone.
If you are staying at an all-inclusive resort and only plan to relax or take one or two excursions, you probably do not need a rental car. But if you want to visit different beaches, mountain towns, local restaurants, waterfalls, scenic drives, or multiple areas of the island, having your own car can give you a lot more freedom.
That being said, renting a car here is something you want to think through. The roads, insurance, traffic, rental company, and vehicle type all matter.
We have driven all over the Dominican Republic, and having a car has allowed us to experience places we never would have seen otherwise. But we have also learned that not all rental choices are equal.
For more detailed tips on what it is actually like to drive here, you can also read our full guide to driving in the Dominican Republic here: Driving Tips in the Dominican Republic
Should You Rent a Car?
A rental car can be a great option if you are comfortable driving in unfamiliar places and want to explore this beautiful island.

It is especially helpful if you are visiting places like Las Terrenas, Samaná, Jarabacoa, Constanza, Barahona, Pedernales, Puerto Plata, Cabrera, Río San Juan, or the northwest coast.
It can also make sense if you are staying at a villa or Airbnb, traveling with kids, visiting more than one town, or simply like being able to stop when you want and move at your own pace.
But if you are flying into Punta Cana and going straight to a resort, or flying into Santo Domingo and staying mostly in the city, renting a car is not worth the stress. In those cases, airport transportation, taxis, private drivers, or organized excursions may be easier.
Choose a Reputable Rental Company
Whenever possible, I recommend renting from a well-known international rental company.
In the Dominican Republic, this is one area where I personally think it is worth spending the extra money. We have rented from smaller local companies before, and while they may be cheaper, we have also had more issues with car quality and mechanical problems.
A cheaper rental is not really a deal if the car gives you problems during your trip.
Some reputable rental companies you may see in the Dominican Republic include Alamo, Enterprise, Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and Budget. Availability depends on the airport or city where you are picking up the car.
You can book directly with the rental company, or you can use a trusted comparison site like DiscoverCars to compare prices, policies, vehicle options, and supplier ratings in one place.
When comparing options, do not only look at the cheapest price. Look at the company, the ratings, the insurance options, the fuel policy, the deposit, and the vehicle type.

Be Careful With Off-Brand Local Companies
I know local rental companies can be tempting because the prices are often lower.
But honestly, I do not recommend using an off-brand local rental company unless you really know the company or have a trusted personal recommendation.
That does not mean every local company is bad. There are definitely good local businesses here. But for most travelers, especially if you are visiting from another country, I think it is worth spending a little more to rent from an international brand.
You want the car to be reliable. You want the paperwork to be clear. You want the insurance to be easier to understand. And if something goes wrong, you want a company with structure and support.
This matters even more if you are planning to drive outside the main cities or resort areas.
Do Not Automatically Book the Cheapest Car
This is one of my biggest rental car tips for the Dominican Republic: do not automatically book the cheapest tiny car.
If you are only staying in Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana, or Punta Cana and mostly driving in the city or on main highways, a smaller car may be fine.
But if you are going almost anywhere else, I recommend renting something with a little height — ideally a small or midsize SUV.
That includes areas like Samaná, Las Terrenas, Jarabacoa, Constanza, Barahona, Pedernales, the north coast, the northwest, mountain towns, beach roads, and Airbnbs or villas outside the city.

The issue is not always the main road. Sometimes the highway is fine, but the road to your Airbnb, beach, restaurant, waterfall, or parking area is where things get rough.
There are speed bumps, dips, potholes, hills, rocks, uneven entrances, and roads that can get worse after rain. A higher vehicle makes a big difference.
A tiny economy car might save you a little money, but it may not be the best choice if you actually want to explore.
Understand the Insurance
Rental car insurance in the Dominican Republic can be confusing, so this is not the part to skip.

Some credit cards offer rental car coverage, but that does not always replace local insurance requirements or liability coverage. Before your trip, call your credit card company and ask exactly what is covered in the Dominican Republic.
At the rental counter, ask what insurance is required, what is optional, what the deductible is, and what happens in case of an accident.
For peace of mind, I would strongly consider full coverage, especially if you are driving outside the city, heading into mountain areas, or planning a road trip.
The goal is not to be scared. The goal is to be prepared.
Important: Ask About Casa del Conductor
This is something most tourists do not know about before renting a car in the Dominican Republic.
If you are involved in a serious accident where someone is badly injured or dies, the driver can be taken into police custody while the accident is investigated. That is why it is important to ask about Casa del Conductor.
Casa del Conductor is a driver protection and accident assistance service. In simple terms, if you are involved in a serious accident, it may allow you to stay at their facility instead of being held in a regular jail while the legal process is handled. They can also provide guidance and legal assistance.
Some rental car companies or insurance packages may include Casa del Conductor, but you should not assume it is included.
When renting a car, ask directly:
“Does this rental include Casa del Conductor?”
Then ask them to show you where it is written in your rental agreement or insurance documents.
This is not meant to frighten you. It is simply something you should know before driving here.
What to Check Before You Drive Away
Before you leave the rental lot, take a few minutes to check the car carefully.
Take photos and videos of the outside, inside, tires, windshield, mirrors, and any scratches or dents. Make sure the rental agent notes any existing damage before you drive away.
Also check that the car has the required paperwork and basic emergency items, including proof of insurance, registration, a first aid kit, a small fire extinguisher, and a reflective triangle.
Ask for the rental company’s emergency number and make sure you understand what to do if there is an accident or mechanical issue.
Do not let anyone rush you through the paperwork.
When Renting a Car May Not Be Worth It
There are plenty of times when I would not rent a car.
If you are nervous driving in other countries, staying mostly at a resort, arriving late at night, traveling solo and not comfortable navigating, or only visiting one area, private transportation may be a better choice.

For example, if you are flying into an airport and going straight to Las Terrenas, Punta Cana, Bayahibe, or another destination where you do not plan to move around much, booking a transfer can be much easier.
One company we have personally liked is Jet Transporte RD. You can text them, they respond in English, they will give you a quote, send a payment link, and arrange your transportation. Send them a message (in english) here via Whatsapp: 809-286-1111
This can be a great option if you are flying into the airport and just need a reliable ride to one area. It is also helpful if you do not want to deal with rental counters, deposits, driving after a long flight, or navigating Dominican roads right away.
Need Help Deciding?
If you are not sure whether you should rent a car, hire a driver, book transfers, or use a mix of options, that is exactly the kind of thing we can help with through our Cliff & Cove trip planning services.
With a custom Dominican Republic trip plan, we can help you figure out what makes the most sense for your itinerary. Depending on your trip, that may mean renting a car for part of the time, arranging airport transportation, helping you find a local taxi contact where you are staying, or building a route that is easier and less stressful.
Sometimes renting a car is the best choice. Sometimes it is not. The goal is to help you enjoy the Dominican Republic in a way that feels smooth, safe, and realistic for your travel style.
Final Thoughts on Renting a Car in the Dominican Republic
Renting a car in the Dominican Republic can open up so much more of the country.
Some of our favorite experiences have come from having the freedom to stop along the way, visit less touristy beaches, try local restaurants, and explore areas that are harder to reach without your own transportation.
But it is also something you should do with your eyes open.
Book with a reputable company. Spend the extra money for an international brand when possible. Read the insurance details. Ask about Casa del Conductor. Consider an SUV. Take photos of the car. Drive during the day when possible. And do not feel like you have to rent a car just because someone else did.
The best transportation choice is the one that fits your trip, your comfort level, and the places you actually want to go.
Quick Rental Car Checklist
Before booking, compare rental companies, not just prices. Choose an international brand when possible, use DiscoverCars or another trusted comparison site to check ratings and policies, ask if Casa del Conductor is included, consider full insurance coverage, check the deposit amount, confirm the main driver has a credit card in their own name, choose full-to-full fuel, look for unlimited mileage, and book an SUV if you are leaving the main city or resort areas.
At pickup, take photos and videos of the car, check the tires, windshield, mirrors, and existing damage, confirm insurance and registration are in the car, ask for the emergency contact number, ask what to do in case of an accident, confirm Casa del Conductor coverage in writing, and do not let anyone rush you through the paperwork.
