Los Patos: The South’s Favorite Place to Chill

If you're planning a trip to the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, Los Patos (the Ducks) is a must-visit destination. Known for its unique combination of river and beach, this spot offers a refreshing escape from the heat and a taste of local culture.
WHAT MAKES LOS PATOS SPECIAL?
Los Patos River
Los Patos is home to one of the shortest rivers in the Caribbean, measuring just 61 meters (about 200 feet) depending on the tide. This cool, shallow river flows directly into the ocean, creating a perfect spot to relax and beat the heat. The river's name, "Los Patos," meaning "The Ducks," harks back to the Muscovy ducks that inhabit the area. You will see the ducks swimming around the river.

Los Patos Beach
The river flows intoa stunning pebble beach. While the turquoise waters are tempting, be cautious—the waves here can be strong, making it more suitable for experienced swimmers. If you like playing (being beat up) by the waves, then hang out right on the shore line. The beach lacks natural shade, so don't forget your sun protection. For a more relaxed experience, the river offers a tranquil setting to unwind.

HOW TO GET TO LOS PATOS?
By Car: Los Patos is about a 45-minute drive from Barahona. As you drive, keep an eye out for the sign marking the turn to Los Patos—it will be on your left. Once you arrive, a 100 pesos parking fee (cash only) will be collected. See the sign below for a helpful visual cue! Click here for the Google location.
By Public Transport: Buses (guaguas) traveling from Barahona to Paraíso or Enriquillo can drop you off at Los Patos. Ensure you have a plan for your return trip, especially if staying past 4 PM.
By Taxi: For a more direct route, consider hiring a taxi from Barahona. Sintra Taxi Service can be reached at 809-524-3003.

ENJOY A LOCAL MEAL AT LOS PATOS
Right along the river, there's a wooden boardwalk lined with small food shacks serving up Dominican favorites—think crispy fried fish, golden tostones, flavorful mixed rice, lobster, or good ol' fried chicken and fries.

You don’t need to stress about picking the “best” spot—honestly, we haven’t found a bad one yet. As you walk by, restaurant staff will call out and try to get you to sit in their area (it’s part of the fun!). Just choose a table that looks good to you, and someone from that restaurant will come over with a menu.
As long as you order food or drinks, you can use their tables and chairs for free. Go ahead and kick off your shoes, dip your feet in the cold river, and sip a chilled Presidente or a piña colada served straight from a pineapple. It’s a full sensory experience—refreshing, relaxing, and delicious.
LOS PATOS TRAVEL TIPS
Best Time to Visit: Midweek during the day offers a more serene experience. Avoid holidays and weekend afternoons, as the area can get crowded and loud (people tend to bring their speakers).
Footwear: Water shoes are recommended for navigating the pebble beach and riverbed.
Personal Belongings: Always keep an eye on your items, especially if you're swimming.
Local Customs: Don't be surprised to see locals bathing in the river; it's a common practice, especially during water shortages.
