STAYING AT THE PORT AT CABO ROJO

Before diving into cruise excursions and DIY options, let’s talk about simply staying at the port. Since this isn't a tender port, you can hop on and off the ship freely throughout the day. The port area itself has shops, pools, a lazy river, a ferris wheel and live entertainment. Some travelers describe it as a “budget version of a Disney-style destination” where nearly everything costs extra and was very crowded. Reviews often mention that chairs fill up fast—so if you want one, get off the ship early. Shade is limited, and it can be extremely hot under the Caribbean sun. Beach access isn’t straightforward either; if it's even available, you’ll likely need to pay for transportation.

So, if that sounds like your style, staying at the port might work for you. But just know this: Bahía de las Águilas, one of the most breathtaking beaches in the Dominican Republic, is just around the corner. Don’t miss the chance to experience the real beauty of this region by staying inside a tourist zone. Check out the cruise line excursions versus booking with trusted local guides—contact information is listed below.

bahia de las aguilas cabo rojo cruise

Heaven on Earth:

Bahia de las Aguilas

Total Duration: 3 hours

Distance from port: 20-30 minute boat ride

Who will love it:  Beach lovers, nature lovers, tranquil travelers

Details: Bahia de las Aguilas, Bay of the Eagles in English, stands as one of the Dominican Republic's most enchanting beaches. This will be the most popular excursion.  Picture this: a pristine expanse of white sand meets crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a haven of unparalleled beauty. You can now embark on this journey without enduring the arduous 6-hour drive from the nearest international airport.

Despite its name, don't expect to spot eagles here; it's merely a nod to the bay's general shape. Situated in a national park, Bahia de las Aguilas offers a raw, unspoiled experience—no restaurants or bars, but they have built restrooms. The cruise will provide a tented area for much-needed shade, ensuring your escape into the sun-drenched tranquility.

This excursion to Bahia de las Aguilas will mostly likely include transportation by boat.

What to know: I didn’t notice any mention of food or drinks being part of this excursion. While there's a chance the cruise might offer snacks or beverages, I recommend bringing your own water bottle just to be prepared. Spending time in the water under the sun can be dehydrating, so it's always wise to stay well-hydrated during your adventures.

Who may want to choose something else: Families with kids (who expect beach games and toys to keep them busy), Teenagers (who want a more active scene)

My thoughts: Bahia de las Aguilas is world-famous! Due to its remote location and travel expenses, even many locals haven't had the chance to visit. Being nearby, I strongly urge you to seize this unique experience. Keep in mind that this isn't the spot for lively activities or an open bar scene, this is a place filled with natural wonders and tranquility.

dune buggy excursion cabo rojo cruise guide

Off-Road Buggy Adventures + Beach Break

Total Duration: 4 hours

Distance from port: near the port

Who will love it: Adventure seekers, teenagers, families

Details: Embark on an exhilarating off-roading adventure from the port to Eco del Mar, discovering the area from a thrilling and unconventional perspective. After the ride, unwind beachside with the added perk of an open bar. Should you crave a bite, there's also a restaurant on-site, where you can order and indulge in a meal at your own expense. Experience the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation in this unique journey.

What to know: While I haven't personally experienced a dune buggy ride, I've seen others who have, and they often return a bit dirty! Therefore, it's advisable to wear clothes you're not overly attached to and bring a bandana to cover your face. The upside is, after the adventure, you can easily wash off in the ocean. Keep in mind that closed-toed shoes are a must. To drive, you must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license. Participation in the activity is open to those aged 8 and above, who must also be at least 4 feet tall..

Who may want to choose something else: Tranquil travelers, nature lovers, clean freaks

My thoughts: While I haven't personally taken a spin in a dune buggy, the sight of others returning a bit dusty suggests it's bound to be a lot of fun! With numerous unpaved paths in the area, this adventure offers a unique and thrill-seeking way to explore the diverse landscape of Cabo Rojo. Get ready for an exhilarating ride that promises both excitement and a firsthand connection with the stunning surroundings.

eco Del Mar beach cabo rojo guide

Eco Del Mar VIP Beach Bliss

Total Duration: 4 hours

Distance from port: 15-20 minute drive

Who will love it:  Beach lovers, party people, families with kid

Details: Eco del Mar stands as a well-established glamping destination, boasting years of providing unique experiences. It's essential to note that this isn't your typical resort or conventional hotel; rather, it's a luxurious beach campsite. Positioned directly on the water, Eco del Mar offers exclusive access to the stunning blue waters of Cabo Rojo. As outlined in the excursion details, guests can enjoy access to watersports, but there's no pool on the premises. The allure extends to an open bar, a tempting feature for many. Additionally, an outdoor restaurant is available for ordering food, although it's important to clarify that the cost is not included in the excursion price.

What to know: Watersports could include paddle boarding, snorkeling and possible kayaking.

Who may want to choose something else: Tranquil travelers, nature lovers, adventure seekers

My thoughts: While the open bar at Eco del Mar may make it a popular choice, having experienced the property myself, I question its suitability for accommodating hundreds of people simultaneously. It lacks the spacious feel of a "beach club," and unless upgrades or booking limitations are implemented, I anticipate potential overcrowding, with the small bar and restaurant struggling to handle the influx of requests. Notably, it appears that two excursions will converge at Eco del Mar, heightening the likelihood of crowding. If you seek a tranquil and peaceful setting for relaxation, this might not be the ideal choice. Although, given the choice between baby beach/beach break and this, I would choose this.

donut beach boat Cabo Rojo guide

BBQ Donut Boat + Beach Break

Total Duration: 4 hours

Distance from port: A short walk from the port

Who will love it:  Families, friend groups, boat enthusiasts

Details: Near the port, enjoy a unique experience aboard a BBQ Donut Boat—an inflatable boat cleverly shaped like a donut. Seated around a grill with an umbrella for shade, you'll have a captain to guide you, and lunch is part of the package. Your experienced chef-guide and captain will invite you to participate in the grilling if you wish or simply relax and watch how it's done. Following your boat adventure and a meal, you'll be dropped off at Baby Beach, a newly named spot, and although information is scarce, it promises to be a delightful addition. Close to the port, there's likely a beach club awaiting your arrival, offering kayaks, an open bar, and a convenient walk back to the ship post-excursion. Explore, relax, and savor the unique charm of this coastal experience.

What to know:  Participants must adhere to a weight limit of 260 lbs, and the minimum age for inclusion is 8. Rest assured, life jackets are provided for safety. Notably, this is the sole excursion offered by Norwegian that includes both an open bar and lunch.

Who may want to choose something else: Introverts, suffers from motion sickness

My thoughts: I must confess, at first this did sound entertaining. However, a concern arises: if you're in a small group, will you be combined with another group in the same boat? Another drawback is the limited exploration of the area, confined solely to a small area. I have also ready reviews about this excursion, and I don't think they have worked out the kinks. I would not recommend this excursion.

baby beach Cabo Rojo

Cabo Rojo Beach Break

Total Duration: 4 hours

Distance from port: 5-10 min walk from the pier

Who will love it:  Tranquil travelers, families, those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation

Details: Baby Beach Club is just a short walk from the port. This area was built exclusively for cruise passengers. Indulge in unlimited refreshing drinks from a select open-bar menu, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in paradise. Enjoy complimentary amenities such as beach chairs and the opportunity to paddle at your own pace in a crystal-clear kayak or try out a stand-up paddleboard, all available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Families with young children will appreciate the specially designed playground, ensuring that guests of all ages can enjoy their time at Baby Beach Club. After soaking up the sun and sea, take a leisurely stroll back to the pier at your own pace, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated from your coastal retreat.

What to know:  Prepare for a day of seaside relaxation by wearing your swimsuit under your clothing and bringing along a towel for convenience. Ensure sun protection with reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen and light clothing for additional coverage, along with a hat to shield yourself from the sun's rays. Swim at your own risk, and take advantage of the available amenities such as restrooms, showers, and changing rooms for added comfort. Please note that the minimum age to consume alcohol is 18 years, with a companion aged 21 years or older. Maximum weight for participation in water activities is 260 lbs (127 kg). This tour is suitable for guests who can walk approximately 250 yards, with accommodations available for those using walkers, canes, or folding manual/lightweight wheelchairs.

Who may want to choose something else: Adventure seekers, thrill-seekers, explorers

My thoughts: This is the simple choice. If you have young children and you are looking for an easy beach day, this is your spot! However, you will miss out on some of the other nearby attractions of the south of the Dominican Republic. If you are up for an adventure, I’d say keep scrolling. If you are looking to spend your money wisely, either go to Bahia de las Aguilas for a real beach excursion or just stay in the port area and enjoy the pool.

pedernales cabo rojo guide

Pedernales Scenic Drive & Beach Getaway

Total Duration: 4 hours

Distance from port: 30-minute drive

Who will love it: Tranquil travelers, beach enthusiasts, those seeking a cultural experience

Details: Go on an adventure to Pedernales, the southernmost border town of the Dominican Republic and Haiti! Your adventure begins with a scenic 30-minute drive through desert landscapes adorned with cacti, offering panoramic views of the stunning surroundings. See the picturesque main park in the heart of downtown and catch a glimpse of day-to-day Dominican life.

Enjoy a local experience at El Navio Restaurant, where you can relish a lunch of freshly prepared fried fish or savor the specialty house hamburger, all while enjoying the tranquility of a seaside setting.

After lunch, unwind on Pedernales Beach with a lounge chair (available on a first-come, first-served basis). Spend a couple of hours basking in the sun and immersing yourself in the beauty of the Dominican Republic's coastline, making it a perfect way to while away the day in blissful relaxation.

What to know: Prepare for a day of seaside enjoyment by wearing your swimsuit under your clothing and bringing along a towel for convenience. Ensure sun protection with reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing for additional coverage, and a hat to shield yourself from the sun's rays. Swim at your own risk and be mindful to bring insect repellent for added comfort. Please note that the minimum age to consume alcohol is 18 years, with a companion aged 21 years or older. This excursion is suitable for guests who can walk approximately 250 yards; however, it is not recommended for guests using wheelchairs due to limited accessibility.

Who may want to choose something else: Adventure seekers, thrill-seekers

My thoughts: Of all of the excursions, this one provides the most cultural experience. You will visit a Dominican town, eat at a local restaurant and be surrounded by the local people. If you are looking for this kind of exposure, I recommend this tour. Go with an open mind and embrace all of the sights and sounds. Pedernales Beach is also a very beautiful spot to relax in. See if you can get your hands on a local Haitian beer, Prestige, it’s delicious!

bird lovers, flamingo cabo rojo port guide

Oviedo Lake Natural Reserve

Total Duration: 5 hours

Distance from port: 60-minute drive

Who will love it: Nature lovers, bird watchers

Details: Your journey begins with a bus ride from the port to Laguna de Oviedo or Oviedo Lagoon, where you'll then embark on a small wooden boat for a lagoon tour. Oviedo Lagoon is a protected area, teeming with diverse wildlife, making it a paradise for bird-watchers, with flamingos often gracing the scene. As the boat tour nears its end, you'll have the unique opportunity to disembark into the shallow waters for a mud bath experience.

What to know: It appears that food and beverages aren't provided on this excursion, and considering limited snack options in the vicinity, it's advisable to bring your water and snacks. While there is a restroom available before boarding the boat, it's worth noting that it's quite rustic, so expectations should be moderate. Additionally, due to boat restrictions, the maximum weight allowed is 260 lbs, and participants must be at least 8 years old.

Who may want to choose something else: This excursion may not be suitable for families with young children who might not fully appreciate the natural beauty or those who prefer avoiding a lengthy two-hour bus and boat ride. Additionally, individuals prone to motion sickness should consider taking precautions, such as bringing along Dramamine.

My thoughts: The roundtrip journey spans approximately 2 hours, allowing for a 2-3 hour window for the tour. Oviedo Lagoon, although undeniably beautiful, is best suited for bird-watchers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a leisurely-paced excursion during their cruise stop.

DIY EXCURSIONS IN CABO ROJO WITH LOCAL GUIDES

Porting at Cabo Rojo stands in stark contrast to other tourist destinations. The southwest of the Dominican Republic, brimming with natural wonders, has, until recently, avoided the mass tourism surge seen in Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. Visitors here traditionally engage in meticulous travel planning, immersing themselves in the authentic local experience. Cabo Rojo, even more secluded than other southern locales, requires a 30+ minute drive to reach the nearest town, Pedernales. English isn't widely spoken in the region.

It's crucial to understand that venturing beyond the port without a plan isn't recommended. Beyond the port area, there's virtually nothing for miles, with ongoing construction projects signaling the future influx of hotels. No restaurants, bars, or other public spaces are within walking distance. Even if you manage to secure a ride to the nearest town, Pedernales, there's limited attractions, as it's a quiet town bordering Haiti. Returning to the port without pre-arranged transportation could prove challenging.
